We end up at parties and gatherings every now and then, but most of the time, we forget the names of three-quarters of the people we meet within a few hours. Nevertheless, there is always one ultra-memorable character at every soiree that no one can stop talking about for months. Such people are called “Unforgettables”. Is there something special they’re doing to be that way? Yes, there is.
Here are five great ways to be a more memorable person anywhere:
- Throw in some jokes, but don’t force out humour
Cracking a funny one might be the best way to get attention in a big group, but be careful enough to make the jokes sound more natural and less artificial. Everyone should feel like it accidentally fell off your tongue, not like you prepared your humour in advance.
- Just got hit by a boring question? Fire a super interesting answer.
“Hey, how was your day?” doesn’t have to be answered with “Oh, just fine”. That’s what anyone would say. Instead, say something like “Oh it was absolutely dreary and mechanical. But in an hour, they’re going to serve ice cream, and that’s going to make up for it!”
Wear at least one item that’s slightly out-of-place, or completely out of fashion… and make it look good. A transparent watch, socks printed with images of cats or a glow-in-the-dark tie if you’re going for a nighttime event. These are sure to get conversations started.
- Let people do your bragging for you…by praising them first!
Maybe you’re a unique character, and a huge achiever in every field. In every conversation, you get a slight urge, a tingle perhaps, to boast about your achievements. Never do that. People who brag are not remembered for what they achieved, but for the fact that they kept bragging. Instead, let someone else do it for you. Speak highly of other people and they will return the favour!
- Be a genuine listener
Is someone talking to you? Don’t just pretend to listen, put some serious effort into it and give them your wholehearted attention. That will make them remember you better. People can tell if you’re not paying attention, and will forget about you and move on to others. Conversations are a two-way street, so listen at least as much as you talk, if not a little more!
There’s no need to mention that in addition to all this, you need to remember the fundamentals of networking: maintain eye contact, don’t forget people’s names, have a firm handshake and give them a good first impression. With a little practice, you can easily become the most memorable person at any social event!
